IATF 16949 – internal auditor

The IATF 16949 internal auditor training is intended for individuals who already possess basic knowledge of IATF 16949 requirements. For participants beginning their work with the standard, prior attendance in IATF 16949 requirements training is recommended. The training prepares participants to independently plan, conduct, and document internal quality management system audits in accordance with IATF 16949, ISO 9001, and ISO 19011 requirements. The program includes requirements resulting from the 6th Edition of the Rules for Achieving and Maintaining IATF Recognition, effective from January 2025.

Participants learn how to conduct evidence-based audits and use audit results to support decision-making and quality management system improvement. The training includes both theoretical and workshop-based sessions, including practical exercises and audit simulations carried out in small groups. The scope of the training can be tailored to the specific nature of the organization.

ℹ️ The current edition of the training covers the planned changes to the requirements. The standard is currently being updated, and following its publication, the training will be adapted to reflect the introduced changes.

FUNDAMENTALS OF AUDITING ACCORDING TO IATF 16949

Content:

  • Introduction to the specifics of the automotive industry from the audit perspective
  • The role of internal audits
  • Relationship between IATF 16949, ISO 9001, and customer-specific requirements
  • Process approach, PDCA cycle, and risk-based thinking in auditing

Exercises:

  • Identification of processes and their interactions within participants’ organizations
  • Analysis: does the system operate effectively or only formally exist?

IATF 16949 REQUIREMENTS

Content:

  • Review of the IATF 16949 requirements structure – what should auditors pay particular attention to during audits?
  • Discussion of automotive-specific requirements: risk, product safety, change management, suppliers
  • Process-based interpretation of requirements from clauses 4–10
  • Preparing audit questions focused on evidence

Exercises:

  • Building a map of IATF requirements for a selected process
  • Assigning standard requirements to real control points within the organization
  • Developing checklists based on IATF requirements

AUDIT PLANNING

Content:

  • Defining audit objectives, scope, and criteria in the automotive environment
  • Developing an audit program based on risk, process results, complaints, and changes
  • Selection of the audit team and preparation of the audit plan
  • Establishing audit priorities for critical and supporting processes

Exercises:

  • Preparing an audit plan for a selected area
  • Identifying audit risks and defining audit priorities

AUDIT INTERVIEW STRATEGY

Content:

  • Building audit checklists based on processes, risks, and customer requirements
  • Creating opening, probing, and verification questions
  • Audit evidence: documents, observations, records, interviews, and process data
  • The most common auditor mistakes

Exercises:

  • Developing an audit checklist for a production process
  • Workshop: asking audit questions and evaluating collected evidence

CONDUCTING AN AUDIT IN PRACTICE

Content:

  • Opening the audit and communication with the auditee – how to build openness and information flow?
  • Conducting audit interviews using active listening and observation
  • Evaluating process compliance and effectiveness based on data, indicators, and process performance
  • How to handle difficult situations during an audit? (resistance, avoiding answers, withholding information)

Exercises:

  • Simulation of an audit interview
  • Analysis of auditor behavior and the quality of the audit interview process

Module 2

DOCUMENTING NONCONFORMITIES AND AUDIT CONCLUSIONS

Content:

  • Differentiating types of audit findings – conformity, nonconformity, observation, risk
  • Linking findings with requirements, evidence, and process impact
  • Distinguishing auditor opinion from objective evidence
  • Formulating nonconformities that provide value to the organization and can withstand challenge

Exercises:

  • Case study analysis: is it already a nonconformity or still an observation?
  • Drafting nonconformities based on audit scenarios

Module 3

AUDIT REPORTING AND POST-AUDIT ACTIONS

Content:

  • Creating the structure of the audit report and methods of presenting results
  • How to communicate audit results to process owners and management?
  • Corrective actions – planning, root cause analysis, and effectiveness assessment
  • Audit effectiveness – how to ensure the audit ends with decisions and improvements, not only a report?

Exercises:

  • Preparing a section of an audit report
  • Simulation of presenting audit results and discussing post-audit actions

Module 4

AUDITOR COMPETENCE AND AUDIT IMPROVEMENT

Content:

  • Competencies of an internal auditor according to ISO 19011 and automotive industry requirements
  • Auditor evaluation and competency development – how to improve audit quality within the organization
  • Using audit results – how to translate them into improved management system effectiveness
  • How to use auditing as a tool for improvement rather than only for compliance?

Exercises:

  • Auditor self-assessment and development plan
  • Workshop: proposals for improving the internal audit program

Requirements for training:

Completion of the training:

The prerequisite for successful completion of the training and obtaining the IATF 16949 Management System Internal Auditor Certificate is active participation in the workshops and passing the test on knowledge of the requirements of the IATF 16949 specification and ISO 19011 guidelines with a positive result.

After the training, each participant will receive a certificate confirming completion of the training.

WHAT IS IATF 16949?

IATF 16949 is an international standard developed by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF), whose members include companies from the automotive industry, more precisely OEM (original equipment manufacturers), such as: BMW Group, Ford Motor Company, Geely Group, General Motors, IVECO Group, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) Limited, Mercedes-Benz AG Group, Renault Group, Stellantis, Volkswagen AG.

IATF 16949 is a set of requirements standardizing production in the automotive industry. This standard extends the long-established requirements of international standards concerning management systems from the ISO 9000 family. Its objective is to improve quality within the supply chain and increase customer satisfaction.

What is the role of an internal auditor?

They are a person responsible for conducting internal compliance audits within the organization’s management system. The internal auditor’s task is to assess the compliance of processes and procedures with requirements, e.g. the IATF 16949 standard (although this also applies to many other standards), and to identify areas for improvement. The role of the IATF 16949 internal auditor is crucial for maintaining high quality and reliability.
