SPC – Statistical Process Control

The SPC training is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the principles for successfully implementing and applying Statistical Process Control (SPC).

The training program presents, in a structured manner, each stage of implementing SPC, including the correct deployment of control charts and the ongoing evaluation of process stability and capability.

Participants will learn how to prepare for SPC implementation, perform preliminary studies of collected data, and effectively monitor process stability and capability.

All SPC tools are practiced through hands-on exercises based on real-world examples. Participants design and use different types of control charts, evaluate process capability using Cp, Cpk, Pp and Ppk indices, and learn how to analyze collected data using fundamental statistical methods.

For in-house training, the course content can be tailored to the specific needs of the organization and the characteristics of its processes.

The following program is indicative (the division into days is arbitrary) and the trainer adapts the course of the training to the specific characteristics of the group. Individual topics may be discussed at a different time or in a different form than indicated in the plan.

Module 1

INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICAL METHODS

Content:

  • The role of SPC in quality management (including the difference between process control and inspection).
  • SPC in industry standards and requirements (PN, ISO, AIAG, AS, etc.).
  • ISO 7870-2 standard – the basis of SPC regardless of the industry.
  • New AIAG&VDA SPC handbook – review of changes and the direction of work with process stability and capability. [DISCUSSION OF CHANGES IN SPC AIAG / VDA]

Module 2

BASIC STATISTICAL TOOLS

Content:

  • Basic statistical measures used in SPC.
  • Stratification and the Paynter Chart – the foundation for understanding data.
  • Using histograms for process evaluation.
  • Common and special causes in a process – where they come from and how to identify them.
  • Percentiles and quantiles – the basis for capability studies in specific cases (SPC according to AIAG&VDA). [DISCUSSION OF CHANGES IN SPC AIAG / VDA]
  • Detecting and handling gross errors – parametric and non-parametric tests (SPC according to AIAG&VDA). [DISCUSSION OF CHANGES IN SPC AIAG / VDA]

Exercises:

Analysis of basic statistical measures.

Analysis of process behavior using histograms – practical case studies.

Analysis of gross errors – case study.

Module 3

NORMAL DISTRIBUTION – SIGNIFICANCE AND APPLICATION

Content:

  • Normal distribution and the “3σ” principle.
  • Methods for assessing data normality (analytical and graphical tests).
  • Evaluation of process capability using the normal distribution.
  • Procedures for SPC when data do not follow a normal distribution (similar distributions, skewness, etc.). [DISCUSSION OF CHANGES IN SPC AIAG / VDA]
  • Significance levels and their application in the use of control charts and capability studies (SPC according to AIAG&VDA). [DISCUSSION OF CHANGES IN SPC AIAG / VDA]

Exercises:

Assessment of distribution normality (graphical method).

Assessment of distribution type using a probability plot – practical case studies.

Analysis of process capability based on sample measurement results.

Module 1

CONTROL CHARTS

Content:

  • Construction of control charts and the differences between control limits and specification limits.
  • Basic charts: X-R/S, X-MR, Me-R – examples of applications.
  • Options for calculating control limits – SPC according to AIAG&VDA (significance level-based calculations). [DISCUSSION OF CHANGES IN SPC AIAG / VDA]
  • Alternative control charts (e.g. p, u, c) – patterns and examples of applications.
  • Special charts (e.g. for short production runs) – review based on the AIAG&VDA SPC handbook. [DISCUSSION OF CHANGES IN SPC AIAG / VDA]

Exercises:

Creating and interpreting control charts (X-R and/or IX-MR).

Creating and interpreting control charts for attribute data.

Analysis of process behavior using variable control charts – practical case studies.

Module 2

QUALITY CAPABILITY ASSESSMENT OF PROCESSES AND MACHINES

Content:

  • Machine capability studies (Cm/Cmk or Pm/Pmk according to AIAG & VDA). [DISCUSSION OF CHANGES IN AIAG / VDA]
  • Process capability studies (Cp/Cpk, Pp/Ppk), including AIAG&VDA guidelines and selected CRM requirements for mandatory sampling. [DISCUSSION OF CHANGES IN SPC AIAG / VDA]
  • Important changes in the approach to calculating Cp/Cpk in SPC according to AIAG&VDA. [DISCUSSION OF CHANGES IN SPC AIAG / VDA]
  • Cmk indicator in CiW – a new approach according to AIAG&VDA. [DISCUSSION OF CHANGES IN SPC AIAG / VDA]
  • Process capability vs. process stability – differences.
  • Capability indices for one-sided specifications.

During the training, more than a dozen exercises are carried out, including: calculating basic process statistics, testing the normality of the distribution of results, creating and analysing control sheets, calculating and analysing process and machine capability (e.g. Cp and Cpk).

Participants will receive worksheets that they can later use in the application of statistical process control in their company.

After the training, each participant will receive a certificate of training.
