Problem solving tools – 8D (G8D)

During the training, participants will learn how to define and report on each of the eight steps in an 8D (8 disciplines) analysis. In addition, tools to support the analysis will be practiced and discussed at the training: 5W2H, Ishikawa Diagram and 5xWhy. The entire course will help correct errors in analysis and forms.

TRAINING PROGRAM

For in-company training, the proposed program is a preliminary suggestion and can be freely adapted to the individual needs of the company.

The following program is indicative (the division into days is arbitrary) and the trainer adapts the course of the training to the specific characteristics of the group. Individual topics may be discussed at a different time or in a different form than indicated in the plan.

Module 1

CONTENT:

  • 8D as a consequence of the appearance of complaints.
  • Traditional ways of dealing with problems – a brief overview.
  • Using 8D (G8D) to solve problems – an introduction.

 

 

Module 2

CONTENT:

  • Identification of problems in practice.
  • Problem description – mandatory elements of any problem description.
  • Are all problems equally important? – Review and prioritization of identified problems – (decision matrix, Eisenhower matrix).

EXERCISES:

Prioritization using the decision matrix and Eisenhower matrix.

Collecting data from external sources.

Collaborating to evaluate the client’s internal documentation or sample trainers.

Module 3

CONTENT:

  • Selection of team members.
  • Roles in the team, establishment of rules of cooperation.

EXERCISES:

Case study with methods of team formation and selection.

Evaluation of internal documentation of the client or sample trainers.

Defining team rules.

Module 4

CONTENT:

  • Defining the problem using 5W2H.
  • IS-ISN’T in combination with 5W2H – common features and additions.
  • Use of problem data sources.

EXERCISES:

Case study with the 5W2H technique.

Case study with IS-ISN’T in combination with 5W2H.

Joint evaluation of plant documentation.

Module 5

CONTENT:

  • Techniques for finding causes – an overview.
  • Direct and indirect causes.
  • Apparent correlations – beware of “blind spots”!

EXERCISES:

Ishikawa cause-and-effect diagram.

Brainstorming in conjunction with 5WHY.

Quantitative picture of the problem – Pareto Diagram.

Activity Network Diagram.

Module 6

CONTENT:

  • Force Field Analysis.
  • Selection of actions: LEQ and ZWI techniques.

EXERCISES:

Priority assessment for actions using LEQ.

Documenting and reporting in accordance with 8D.

Joint evaluation of facility documentation.

Module 7

CONTENT:

  • Evaluation of the effectiveness of activities.
  • Closing the activities and summarizing the work of the team.

EXERCISES:

Case study for evaluation of effectiveness.

Evaluation of motivation methods and effectiveness of problem teams.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

A large part of the training consists of exercises and workshop work, during which the practical application of the 8D method is presented. Participants are primarily expected to understand how to plan and implement corrective and preventive actions in order to reduce as much as possible the disturbances arising in their companies.

After the training, each participant will receive a certificate confirming the training.
